Much of the commercial pet food on the market today may not meet the nutritional needs of animals. Read more about what is really in pet food. http://www.vitalitypetcare.com/pages/nutrition.htm

Animal Protection Institute

Meat by-products: can include bones, blood, intestines, lungs, ligaments, heads, feet, and feathers.  All of these items are organs or parts either often condemned for human consumption.

Meat meal: indicates that ingredients are not fresh, and are instead rendered. Rendering refers to a process where the animal parts used are boiled in a vat for several hours. These high temperatures may result in destroying or altering the natural proteins and enzymes found in fresh ingredients.

Wheat Gluten: Many companies often use this as their main source of protein rather than meat. Many dogs are also allergic to wheat.  The food recalls of 2007 were due to melamine-tainted wheat gluten imported from China.  (Frenchie’s uses only whole cuts of meat to provide protein, never uses wheat in any of its products, and does not import any of its ingredients.)

Corn: Low cost corn products are difficult for dogs to digest and many dogs are allergic to corn.

Food Fragments: Lower cost by-products of another food manufacturing process. Examples include wheat bran and brewer's rice (a waste product of the alcohol industry).

Animal and Poultry Fat: Often sprayed on dry food to make otherwise unappetizing meals edible.

Note: The first five ingredients in a dog food play a significant role in the nutritional make up of the food.  The primary source of protein should come from animal protein and not a vegetable protein or grain.
