Our Founder
Sara’s drive to provide more nutritious dog food first began with her own beloved companions.
Sara’s Chinese Pug, Gucci, was diagnosed with untreatable cancer in March 2007. As Gucci became ill, she began to refuse to eat, drink, or come out of her kennel. That’s when Sara began researching cancer diets and food therapy. “I read everything I could get my hands on. My goal was to find a diet that would make Gucci feel better,” explains Sara.
Sara discovered that a diet high in vegetables would allow Gucci enough water to stay hydrated. As Gucci’s appetite gradually returned and she began to come out of her kennel again. “Gucci began to get excited about food and ate well until the very last day of her life,” recalls Sara.
In addition, Sara’s daughter, Melis, bought a French Bulldog named Romeo who quickly became a finicky eater. “Romeo never wanted to eat the commercial foods we gave him. Melis had to feed Romeo by hand just to get him to eat.” Melis took him home to mom for help.
While in Texas, Romeo began to suffer adverse digestive symptoms, and was in and out of the hospital to receive medication via IV. The vet finally prescribed many medications as well as a popular commercial diet used to treat dogs with digestive problems. “Although Romeo would eat this food, I soon discovered from the nutritional labels that there was nothing nutritious in it,” explains Sara.
During what she describes as a very long journey of discovery and research, Sara came across an article in the Dallas Morning News about a veterinarian in Dallas who utilized Food Therapy as part of her holistic practice. The practitioner was Pam Montgomery-Fittz, DVM. Sara was so impressed and inspired by the article, that she scheduled an appointment with Dr. Pam. Upon hearing of Romeo’s symptoms and Sara’s home-made food, Dr. Pam told Sara she was on the right track, but did a bit of fine tuning to the diet. (Read more about Dr. Pam on her website http://www.vitalitypetcare.com/ ).
Sara’s love for dogs and her success with Food Therapy has motivated her to create Frenchie’s Kitchen to help other dog owners. Beyond Frenchie’s Kitchen, Sara plans to set up a non-profit organization with a mission to help ensure shelter dogs have a home with the care they need. This organization will foster education about buying and adopting dogs, dog care, as well as financially supporting no-kill dog shelters.
